Five signs your brake pads need replacing

Brake pads are designed to wear down over time, so they need replacing at some point. Catching it early keeps you safe and can protect the discs from damage.

1. A high-pitched squeal

Many pads have a small metal wear indicator that squeals when the friction material gets thin. If you hear a steady squeal when braking, have the pads checked.

2. A grinding sound

A harsh, metallic grinding usually means the friction material has worn away and metal is meeting metal. This can damage the discs, so do not leave it.

3. Longer stopping distances or a soft pedal

If the car takes longer to slow down, or the pedal feels different from usual, get the brakes inspected without delay.

4. Vibration or pulling to one side

A shaking pedal or steering wheel when braking can point to uneven wear or warped discs. If the car pulls to one side, the brakes may be wearing unevenly.

5. A warning light, or thin pads you can see

Some cars have a brake wear warning light. You can also often see the pad through the wheel spokes. Many manufacturers advise replacing pads at around 3 mm of friction material, but check your vehicle handbook for the figure that applies to your car.

Good to know

Pads are normally replaced in pairs on the same axle, front or rear, so the braking stays balanced. Brakes are a safety system: if you are not sure, have them inspected by a qualified mechanic straight away.
